volume IV - hehehe - "free" so it's really funny because i've been reflecting on my time spent in new england a lot lately. in late summer '01 i went on a field trip to acadia national park with the western kentucky geology club...i know i know...so i was a nerd. i love nerds. and of course i couldn't just go there and back. i had to make an even bigger field trip out of it. i had planned on being on the road for about a month. well, i met up with a friend of mine up there and i kinda ended up getting a job. we were staying on an island on moosehead lake up in central maine. the only electricity on the island was one phone line. so my friend was calling his employer to inform them that he would not be returning for the fall season. he was moving on to massachusetts. but, on a whim i said...tell 'em i'll take your place. and they said okay, can you be here on monday? well, i don't quite remember what day it was, but i knew that i didn't have everything that i would need for this particular job. so i said, well i know that kentucky isn't really "on the way" between here and up-state new york, but i'll be there as soon as i can. okay, so you're getting a little more background than i had intended, but keep reading, i promise the song is in here somewhere. so while i was living in new york up on lake george, a friend of mine named brett and i wrote this song. it wasn't called free. i don't know that it was called anything. it was, however, mostly the same music still used in the song today. brett had a way with lyrics...especially after a strong night in ticonderoga or an evening at the tavern. so we had come up with some really lewd and crude lyrics...i mean, brett did...not me, i'm an angel and don't use such language! and so the "song" sat in one of my journals for a long, long time before i came across it. i cleaned it up a little bit, and ta-da. free. i had played that bluesy riff around so many campfires it's ridiculous. it really lends itself well to some good freestylin'! well, there ya have it folks. peace.
ps - brett - if by some great cosmic chance you read this, let's get together and write some more tunes! the last time i heard from you was the "drunk call" when you caught me in hawaii!!! i hope you're well.

That was an interesting story Nate.
I have to say the most memorable thing I recall about Free is the time when Nate & I were at my empty house jamming in my bath-bedroom (it's an 8x10 room with a bathtub in the middle of it) and he was sitting on the bathtub admiring the trout I had in my aquarium (which I had caught at the honey hole earlier that day). We had a friend Heath sitting over jamming (on guitar). We got to the part that I play some faster stuff, and Heath tried his hand on it after I did. No offense to Heath (great guy, troubled, but an inspired guitar player) but it was at that moment that I realized it was just me & Nate -- all we needed was the perfect percussionist.
On that note... we had lots of people interested in playing 'drums' for us, but we had this idea of a percussionist that wasn't just limited to a drum kit... that was creative, loved trying different things, and had rock solid rhythm. Some people jammed with us once or twice, but we were never satisfied. One night Nate & I went to open mic at the Dragon upstairs and Craig was up there playing with another guy: playing a beautiful set of congas with some brushes, it sounded great! We asked him if he was interested in jamming along with us, and he did. It sounded so amazing, Nate & I kept looking at eachother and grinning. Afterward we approached him about jamming again, and we finally got together for real... Craig was everything we had imagined and more... and Local Spirits was born.

volume V - "days of our lives" you know i struggled with the name of this song just because of the obvious connection to the t.v. program. but then i thought..."why should i change, they're the ones that suck?" (office space anyone?) anyway. you know how some things are just perfect? like a sphere...i love spheres. they're perfect. or a wave in the ocean...again perfect. well, i could go on and on about things that i think are perfect, but i'm not. i will add one more, however, because it is obviously an integral part of how this song came to be. if you've ever sat around a campfire with an acoustic guitar then you know where i'm going with this. that may be the closest thing to a perfect "setting" as i can think of. how can you not truly enjoy sitting around a campfire with an acoustic guitar? ahh, takes me back. anyway, after brandon dropped me off in south dakota this summer i made my way out to jackson hole wyoming. i met up with two of my best friends aaron and ryan for some backcountry fly fishing and alcohol consumption, or "fish finder" if you will. anyway, two of my other really close friends that i lived with in hawaii came up from salt lake city for a few days. (beth and brandon) so we all packed up and went out into the gros ventre range to fish for some cutthroat trout. the place was off the charts. we took a gravel/dirt road for about 40 miles out into the middle of nowhere...it was perfect. so we fished all day, and by the way, the fishing was great. we were rippin' lip like it was going out of style! those fish were hungry. then we went back to camp and dove head-first into the coolers. i'm pretty sure we polished off all of the elijah craig, all of the strohs, and most of the pbrs....it was perfect. luckily we had had the foresight to grab some firewood from aaron's place before heading out so we had a killer campfire. so we sat, drank, played music and sang for most of the night and just thoroughly enjoyed the moment. all of our paths crossing in that particular space and time was amazing....maybe even perfect. and if you've never sat around a campfire with guisepe scagnetti III (ryan) and a bottle of bourbon, well folks you haven't lived yet! it's truly a life changing experience! so the chorus from "days of our lives" comes directly from that night. "campfires and acoustic guitars; underneath those western skies; sing sing along yeah i'll play your favorite song; cause these are the days of our lives." the verses just kind of came to me at random. once the chorus was there, i just had to fill in the blanks. the third verse came directly from there as well. "i love that mountain air and every time that i'm out there; spend my time out in the stream; livin' the good life where everything is just right; and i've got everything i need." and there you have it. so next time you find yourself sitting around a campfire, take a minute to really appreciate it. i think there's a reason you can't help but to stare at the flames like you're in a trance...it's hard to take your eyes off of something that's perfect.

nate I have to say another great one. I think when you have the chance to meet up with friends that you haven't seen for awhile can truly be a great time. I have my buddies Pete and Mike, when ever we all get together we have a great time telling stories drinking telling stories drinking drinking drinking telling stories.. You get the point. We did and saw a bunch of crazy stuff over in Iraq so when ever we are around each other we know that we can relate to things that nobody else can.... Ok i think I got off the story... To finish, Nate I feel ya dam good story

Good story Nate.
Here's my new bass story:
I walked into Wilcutt guitars in Lexington, looking to buy some strings. They are usually 2 for 1 there, so it's a good place to load up.. I thought hey! why don't I go see what they've got back there, never know.. I wasn't shopping.
(As a preface to this let me say 2 other times I was 'not shopping,' walked into Wilcutt, found perfect guitars and dropped a couple g's, prior)
I see this acoustic bass there and it looks kind of funky. It's got a nice color, wood, etc but the body conformation is not really what I like.. it's thin, not as thick as my acoustic (these are my first impressions). I just had to pick it up, give it a strum just to see...
Well of course they have my amp there because I bought my amp there, and the second I started playing that guitar I knew I had to have it. The sound is just amazing, especially plugged in.. she plays like an electric, has the tone of an acoustic, and best of all.. doesn't hum and feed back like my doghouse acoustic bass (the big one you guys are used to seeing me play). I wasn't even shopping and I got roped in.. ah well.
She's a beaut -- come see her tonight!
'Nuff said.
